Recreational activities a benefit to entire community
The Pelham Community Centre promises to have a significant positive impact on the Town of Pelham and the larger Niagara region. Several community groups have already expressed interest in making use of the new facilities including the municipality, Pelham Minor Hockey, Niagara Centre Skating Club, Pelham Panthers Hockey, Faith Tabernacle Hockey, several Old-timers’ leagues, and the Fonthill and District Kinsmen.
The region is currently underserved in regards to indoor recreational facilities, compared with other areas with similar demographics in Canada. The new Community Centre will offer local sports and recreation organizations space to practice, as well as somewhere for spectators to gather and social gatherings to be held. The Pelham Community Centre will address the fact that there is not a single multi-purpose community centre in Pelham.
Residents of all ages serve to benefit from the beautiful new addition. A study conducted at the University of Quebec in 2011 asserts that community recreation has positive effects on the social relationships between adolescents, their peers, and their teachers. Other cited benefits of community-based activities include a feeling of belonging, a positive community climate, a network of mutual support, support for vulnerable families, and a positive representation of recreation in the region.
“The Pelham Community Centre is poised to make a fundamental change in our region,” said Mayor of Pelham, Dave Augustyn. “We look forward to welcoming many new citizens in the years to come as a direct result of this project.”
